OpenShift is a strong commercial Kubernetes distribution with mature enterprise tooling. The trade-off is the Red Hat subscription model and tight coupling to the Red Hat / IBM ecosystem. When OpenShift may not be the right answer

Where OpenShift is genuinely better
The table understates what OpenShift customers actually buy. OperatorHub with Red Hat-certified operators, UBI base images on a supported lifecycle, and a vendor who will take a support call about a third-party operator running on their platform. For an organisation whose procurement requires a certified, supported image for every component, that ecosystem settles the question, and Cozystack has no equivalent certification programme and does not claim one. Add to it: a compliance operator and published FIPS-validated cryptographic modules, an installer that handles day-2 cluster upgrades end to end, and Red Hat’s own security response process.
What Cozystack offers instead is a smaller set of managed services maintained as part of the platform — PostgreSQL, MariaDB, ClickHouse, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, S3, managed Kubernetes — rather than a marketplace of operators you assemble and then own. Upstream operators run on it normally; they are simply your responsibility, as on any Kubernetes.
One correction in Red Hat’s favour on cost: price a VM-heavy estate against the OpenShift Virtualization Engine SKU rather than the full OpenShift subscription. A cost case built on the wrong SKU will not survive contact with a Red Hat account team.
Both platforms are KubeVirt-based, so the underlying VM model is similar. What differs is licensing, operational footprint, and whether a certified ecosystem is a requirement or an overhead.
